What’s the Point?Last weekend my husband and I ran the Bayshore Half Marathon. It was a solid run, but our training had been less than ideal and we were both pretty beat up afterward. We weren’t conditioned for 13.1miles to feel “good” in any scenario, and were glad it was over. I mentioned this sentiment to some friends, and one replied “what is really the point, if it’s not fun?” Well, my hackles went up so fast! But this is a valid question, and it prompted me to consider my instinctive defensiveness. In response, I would say that it’s fun to have goals and work toward them. It’s fun to be fit. It’s fun to be surrounded by a bunch of people who chose to run the same race. And also, we can love running but still not enjoy every run. Antonio (my husband) and I knew the race was going to be tough. Probably not super fun. But there were many reasons to do it: we were healthy, we had committed, we’d trained (although not quite enough), and at the end of the day, we wanted to have done it. There’s a sense of accomplishment to be gained from doing something hard, and satisfaction that comes from following through. Sincerely, Nicole
