Making PlansWinter is usually a pretty quiet season in the running world. Colder temps and limited daylight hours make running more complicated, not to mention less appealing. The race calendar is always sparse (even when there isn’t a pandemic happening) which means there’s no urgency to training. What gets us through these cold dark months? Next season. Spring races. Goals and plans. So what now? As I’m writing this, covid is spiking almost everywhere. We’re wondering if we can make plans for the holidays, let alone for a race schedule. But let’s do it anyway - let’s put some races on the calendar. What’s the downside? We’ve already been through almost 9 months of cancellations and survived it. And there’s something even worse than cancelled plans — Nothing to look forward to. Obviously we can’t be sure if the races will happen next year. The big ones are less likely, so maybe don’t bank on Boston as your first race back after covid, but there are a lot of other options - smaller, local races in particular. When an event might not happen, that also means it might actually happen. So it’s time to arrange some fully refundable reservations. Pencil out some weekends on the 2021 calendar. Make some plans. Not as a denial of reality, but as a decision to be hopeful. Sincerely, Nicole
