Closing out a decade demands a bit of reflection. Ten years ago my professional running career was just starting. Now I’m retired and in this past year just squeezed in the beginning of my new business, Sifuentes Coaching. Taking on a new goal, project or resolution can be exciting but it’s easy to get discouraged or lose momentum on the journey. As an Olympic athlete I had many goals. Some of them I achieved, but even more I did not. Along the way I learned to give myself credit not just for an accomplishment, but for everything I did to work toward it. I learned to extend kindness and patience to myself in the inevitable disappointments. I came to understand the importance of validating my own efforts instead of constantly focusing on what more I could be doing. I learned to enjoy the process. Bringing these lessons to my new career and sharing them with my clients is a great privilege. This first year of Sifuentes Coaching has been a true joy for me. Thank you for being part of it — inviting me to share in your successes: Runners have set personal bests in every distance you can think of, become age group winners, first time marathoners, and more confident moving toward bigger goals. Whether or not you’re a “resolutions” kind of person, I encourage you to approach your pursuits full of hope. I wish you success, but even more than that, I wish you the ability to see, recognize, and celebrate every single step you take along the way.
