A Little Break

Every month I write one of these letters.

I reflect on the challenges that you (my audience) might be facing in training, what my clients are going through, and the things my followers are saying and I try to deliver some kind of encouragement or motivation.

Tall order right now.

I’m just going to go ahead and acknowledge that like many of you— I’m scared and incredibly unsettled about what the US leadership is doing. It is so bad.

So it follows that “how to get fit while dealing with the snow” isn’t really top of mind, and I’m not sure what I have to offer.

While I have always loved working out, in recent days running has been more of a balm for me than a way to get fit.

It’s a break in the day where my thoughts aren’t so heavy and I focus on the mile ahead. It’s a chance to rest my mind so that when the run is over, I can face this harsh reality and show up for my family, friends, and clients.

Running is something that helps me cope with the turmoil. I hope it’s helping you too.

Sincerely, Nicole

Nicole’s Curated Content

Flowchart: from Dr. Caleb Burgess

Below is an excellent visual aid for helping navigate through pain or discomfort. The point isn’t to stop working out, but to adjust the plan/program/workout so that you can keep going with less or no pain.

I always advise that even while injured it’s important to continue doing any activity or exercise that doesn’t hurt. Keep moving keep moving keep moving!

Meme of the Month: from @thedumbrunner

What’s your level of self-deception these days?

Personally, mine is high… but not because I’m running outside. I’ve just started to convince myself that I love the treadmill. 🫠

The Case Against Treadmills

I want to be clear about something big: the treadmill requires less mental focus and engagement than running outside does.
