Contralateral Affect

Did you know that if you train only one side of your body, the other side will get stronger too? — the untrained side gets up to 50% of the benefit doing none of the work!

This phenomenon is called the “contralateral affect.” It works because our brain is learning and becoming more efficient even while training only one side but both sides have access to those neurological gains.

With the new year ahead, motivation is high. We’re setting goals and all the potential challenges are still out of sight. But when we (inevitably) meet those challenges, remember that training is for both body and mind.

We can make progress even when things may not be going to plan. The effort is always worth it. Good luck in all your endeavours for 2025 and happy new year!

Sincerely,
Nicole

2025 is for Strength Training

We (humans) naturally lose muscle mass and strength starting in our 30’s, about 3-8% every 10 years. Muscle and strength declines even faster in women transitioning through menopause.

The good news is that strength training can help us maintain and build muscle no matter when we start. It’s never too late.

Just get started 💪

@running_peak with a great display of many running shoe options available.

Running shoes aren’t being categorized for foot type anymore. They are categorized based on their intended use (type of run or workout).

If the choices seem overwhelming, check out my blog post below: how to pick the right running shoes.

Meme of the Month from

@cepaustralia… you and me both.

I’ve been sick and feeling run down for the past week, but think I’m past the worst of it. With a big long run (20 miles) scheduled in a few days, is it okay to run assuming I’m feeling up for it?

Sincerely,
On the Mend

Dear On the Mend,

Sorry to hear you’ve been sick! It’s usually ok to run short and easy if you feel up for it both physically and mentally. If your body feels better but you still have no motivation to run, you probably still need a bit more time to recover.

Your first run back after being sick should definitely not be a 20miler. If you’re able to get a couple easy days in before the long run and those runs are energizing (as opposed to making you feel drained) then you can attempt the long run.

Even if you feel ready for the long run, don’t commit to the full distance when you set out. Instead, take one mile at a time and see how it goes.

Remember, it doesn't have to be all or nothing! Listen to your body. I think a route with loops or the option to bail early would be wise.

Sincerely,

Nicole
