Trust the Process

Have you ever heard that phrase - “Trust the Process?”

Leading up to races I always had varying levels of doubt, uncertainty and nervousness. This is normal and there are a lot of ways to navigate this anxiety. But being told to “Trust the Process” was never very encouraging for me.

What exactly is “the process?”

What am I trusting “the process” to do?

Is “the process” worthy of my trust?

I think this phrase is meant to inspire commitment to the process of training and preparing for your goal race. With commitment, you can then trust the process to allow you to accomplish your goals.

But the truth is, “the process” can’t guarantee us anything. No amount of preparation can completely protect us from a bad race, a mishap or an untimely injury.

There is however one thing we can trust the “the process” to deliver every time: Experience.

Regardless of your finishing time and place, regardless of whether you even make it to to the start line or the finish line, the process of preparation will help you:

  • Learn to better measure your effort

  • Become more disciplined

  • Get stronger and faster

  • Teach you how to better avoid/navigate injury

  • Discover more about how your body recovers

We can trust that “the process” will bring a wealth of experience valuable now and in the future.

Performance of the Month

“10th full marathon, 1st negative split.
Overall I felt strong and in control the whole 26.2”

Katarina ran 3:14:19 at the Sprouts Mesa Marathon on February 8th

It was a bumpy road getting to this start line…

Katarina lost some training time due to nagging issues in the quad and IT band. We adjusted the training plan, slashed mileage, eliminated workouts and put all the focus on getting healthy.

On race day she was healthy and fit! Realistically we also needed to adjust her initial goal to PR. The new goal was to start conservatively, measure her effort and ensure a strong finish.

In her 10th marathon Katarina executed the race plan perfectly and for the first time ever she negative split a marathon: her second half was faster than the first. Being able to pick up the pace, pass other runners and finish strong feels so, so good.

Katarina is the perfect example that no matter what happens we can always trust the process to deliver valuable experience and knowledge to build on.

She’ll be making a quick turnaround for another shot at a PR in Boston!
