Suggested Workouts When I start my new Garmin watch, it presents me with a suggested workout for the day. Usually I ignore this prompt, but recently I thought it might be fun to try one out.
Immediately I noticed that the suggested workouts are way too hard for me. I laughed it off and figured with a bit more data the suggestions would become more appropriate. That hasn’t happened yet. But even if the program does adjust, I still have some big questions… like what event is my Garmin training me for? What does it want me to achieve? Without this information, how can it possibly make good suggestions? My watch doesn’t know that my goal right now is to build up to 30miles a week without another setback. It doesn’t know that hill repeats are my favourite workout. I can’t tell my watch that I dream of still being able to sprint around the track when I’m a grandma. The human element is what separates coaching from a training plan. It’s the most challenging (also the most interesting) thing about my job. As a coach, I rarely think about the “best workouts” or newest training philosophies, but I’m always thinking about the people I work with. What do they value in the training experience? What do they want to achieve? What is their motivation? I’m in the business of suggesting workouts every single week— but I need to know something about you first.
Sincerely,
Nicole
