Testing the Waters

In-person races are back! The return to racing is always exciting, but comes with a little apprehension too.

I remember toeing the line for the first time after an “offseason.” Even as a pro runner, I used to wonder “am I even fit?’ “do I remember how to race?” and ‘am I still tough?”

Already this year, a few of you have had that first race back experience, except it was after a much longer than usual hiatus. And I know it was a little nerve-wracking.

But we get better at racing by racing. Every year, we have to re-familiarize ourselves one race at a time with the routine, the nerves, the discomfort, and the excitement of race day.

Knowing this, the best way to approach these early races is with curiosity and gratitude.

Curiosity - to find out what it feels like to race again. And to find out where your fitness is now with the expectation that you’ll improve with more races.

And gratitude - because if you’re lining up to race it means the opportunities are there and you’re healthy enough to toe the line.

Good luck to all who are testing the waters of racing again. Knowing that the first race back is just the start, ask yourself “I wonder how well I’m going to run today?” And then go find out.

Sincerely,
Nicole
