Consistency Over Perfection I always run when the sun is out. I need to take advantage considering Michigan’s skies are overcast 300 days of the year.
The weather plays a huge role not only in our motivation but also in the logistics of training. Winter conditions are tough for us northerners! And that’s okay. In fact, this is the best time to truly embrace the most important training concept: Consistency Over Perfection. Through the winter, I regularly encourage runners to drop out of races, run slower and cancel workouts in order to protect their fitness and avoid injury. The memo for workouts is always ***only if the roads are clear and safe! As for motivation, we don’t need to muscle through the winter blahs. It’s okay to reduce the overall training load and add more flexibility to the plan. Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “Spring PRs are made in winter training.” There’s truth to it, but ultimately spring PRs don’t come to runners who are burnt out, frustrated or injured from fighting through winter. And so we run with the goal to be consistent and maintain momentum. To run more days than we don’t run. To take advantage of the good days. Our goal is to emerge from this season unscathed in body and mind, eager to run more and run faster than winter allowed. Until then, we keep moving. Sincerely, Nicole
