Fun On Deck

At some point in the last month almost every runner I coach began focused training for a specific spring race.

This is really fun (for me, as the coach. I love race builds)!

But for you - it’s maybe not so much fun.

The training is no joke, we are on a timeline, and it’s still the cold, wet winter.

Last week on a particularly challenging day one of the runners I coach said, I talked myself into "just doing something." 5 minutes in, I committed. Each mile was an achievement and challenge. I was tired at the end but very proud.

This is what it takes.

We’re training hard now to have confidence when we get to the start line, to feel that great feeling of preparedness, and for the best chance of success on race day.

Spring is coming, and it’s going to be fun.

Sincerely,
Nicole

Runner of the Month

James is first and foremost a tennis player. He started training with Sifuentes Coaching 3 years ago to to improve in endurance for his game.

But this month, James ran the Publix Run for the Arts 5km.

The plan was simple: run the race like a 3 mile progression run (a workout he’s done many times) and save some energy for the last 0.1.

His splits were as follows:

mile 1) 8:08
mile 2) 7:32
mile 3) 7:17
final 0.1 mile) 7:05 pace

James won his age group and set PRs in both the 5k and in the mile. And talk about a nice progression!

“I am delighted with the placing, my execution, and personal bests.
The execution and personal bests are what really count for me.”

Two weeks later, James lined up at the Edison Festival of Light 5km and lowered his PR to 23:14!!! His splits were 7:32/7:33/7:20/6:20 pace (for 0.1).

Congratulations James!

Funny, but real!

Double long runs are a staple around here. They’re a great way to practice running on tired legs.
