What Else is True?I coach recreational runners. Everyone I work with truly loves running and is serious about their goals, but they are not pros. They have jobs and families and running is not their top priority. So as you would expect, sometimes workouts get missed. Runs get cut short. And then when the big race is approaching, there is this worry — What about the training I missed? It’s easy to get caught up in these concerns, especially when they are undeniable facts. Research has demonstrated that humans tend to remember negative and bad events more vividly than positive ones. This is why we have to be intentional about what we think about — the default isn’t in our favour! Yes, it’s true. Everyone misses some training. But guess what else is true? They didn’t miss most of the training.
So instead of thinking about the runs cut short, think about every completed mile. Instead of worrying about the missed sessions, focus on all the successful workouts. And instead of dwelling on anything that didn’t go as planned, remember everything that did. Sincerely, Nicole
